Protecting the Black Rhinos of the Masai Mara – Securing the Future of a Species
In a collaborative effort to safeguard the critically endangered black rhino population in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, 13 rhinos were recently GPS ear-tagged and ear-notched. This conservation milestone was made possible through a partnership involving the Narok County Government, Kenya Wildlife Service, and multiple conservation organizations.
Black rhinos are a cornerstone species, vital to the ecosystems they inhabit. The Masai Mara is one of the last places where a free-ranging population of black rhinos exists, numbering between 55 and 70 individuals. However, their survival remains precarious due to habitat loss and poaching, with their numbers having dropped significantly since the 1960s. The recent tagging operation is part of a wider initiative to monitor and protect these rhinos more effectively. Using advanced GPS technology, rangers can now track rhino movements in real time, a crucial step in addressing threats such as poaching and human-wildlife conflict.

Ear notching—a process of clipping small sections of rhinos’ ears for identification—is a vital part of rhino monitoring. Combined with GPS tracking, it helps rangers understand how these animals use the landscape, ensuring the best strategies for their survival.
